Apple’s new iPad has legions of eager fans who attribute chameleon-like qualities to it, promoting the tablet as an ideal media player, e-book reader, gaming console, and even a Netbook replacement for basic computing chores.

Most often cited is the iPad’s speed, and it indeed feels very quick and responsive, and generally comes off as a powerful tool compared with a standard Netbook, which can feel sluggish even when performing the most basic tasks.

Yet under the hood, it’s obvious that a typical S$699 (US$502.84) Netbook has much more powerful hardware. It’s Atom N450 CPU runs at 1.66GHz, it has 1GB of RAM (nearly four times as much as an iPad), and even Windows 7 Starter Edition is a much more capable operating system than the iPhone OS.

But specs on paper are one thing, real-world performance is something entirely different. To see which machine was actually faster, we decided to pit a Netbook (in this case an Asus Eee PC 1001P) against an iPad in head-to-head competition.

Some may call this an apples to oranges comparison, others would say it’s more like oranges to tangerines. In either case, our standard Windows 7/OSX/Linux benchmarks won’t run on the iPad (as it’s a walled garden of App Store software), so we will instead rely on a series of hand-timed anecdotal tests. Keep in mind these are significantly less scientific than the typical benchmarking we do on laptop and desktop PCs, and the results are meant only to provide a general overview.

With those admonitions in mind, we ran a boot-up time test, a Web page rendering test, and a browser-based JavaScript test on both devices. The tests were repeated several times to ensure consistency, and the boot-up and Web page rendering tests were hand-timed with a stopwatch.

You can see a time-condensed version of the testing in the video below.

As expected, the iPad’s boot-up time was much faster than the Netbook’s. After all, the iPad is booting up a slim OS, specifically designed for low-power systems. The Netbook, on the other hand, is running effectively the same Windows 7 (although in this case it’s the slightly stripped-down Starter Edition) as full-size multicore laptops do.

When it comes to fully rendering a Web page (our CNET home page, in this case) the two systems were exactly tied. But it’s difficult to read too much into a Web-page-loading test, as many other factors can influence it (we used the Safari Web browser on our Netbook, and cleared the cache on both devices between tests).

It’s only when we got to our JavaScript test that the Netbook showed its real advantage. When it comes to performing tasks not specifically designed for its hardware and operating system, the iPad is no match for even an entry-level Netbook.

As we mentioned before, these were extremely anecdotal tests, and should not be considered on par with the typical highly controlled benchmarking we do for laptops and desktops. The results are only intended to give you a broad overview of how a Netbook and the iPad compare in head-to-head competition.

Pilots of the Polish air-force jet that crashed and killed a high-level government delegation while approaching a Russian military airport may have lacked key navigation aids and ground collision-warning systems routinely used by commercial flights around the world.

As investigators continued to pursue leads and began analyzing flight-data recorders recovered from the fiery wreckage of the Russian-built Tupolev 154, many details remained murky. Preliminary reports from the Smolensk-Severnyi military field indicated the 20-year-old plane clipped the tops of trees, plummeted to the ground and broke apart about half a mile short of the runway in dense fog. The plane’s crew apparently had aborted a previous landing attempt.

A girl puts flowers Sunday at the site near Smolensk, Russia, where the Polish government plane crashed.

Russian officials said that air-traffic controllers had advised the pilots to divert to one of several other airports. Russian media on Sunday quoted officials saying that early signs didn’t reveal any engine problems or other aircraft malfunctions.

Even at this early stage, safety experts are pondering a basic question: Did Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and the rest of the victims have some of the basic safety protections—both on board and on the ground—that safeguard nearly all airline passengers every time they land in a Western-built jet?

The investigation is unlike most: A military flight isn’t governed by the United Nations rules that specify how the process is to be conducted. The U.N. rules, for example, would guarantee Poland access to all investigation work conducted by Russia. So far, Russia has invited Poles to participate as an act of goodwill, but national sensitivities around the crash could spark conflicts, with no clear rules for settlement.

Because the flight was operated by the Polish military and carrying diplomats, it didn’t have to follow safety rules that govern commercial passenger flights.

With visibility reportedly at less than half a mile at the time, a commercial aircraft typically would have been relying on an instrument landing system providing its pilots a so-called glide slope to help safely descend toward the runway. In this case, according to some safety experts, preliminary reports indicate that the Polish jet may have been on a nonprecision approach, which would have given the pilots the location of the end of the runway but perhaps no clear depiction that their plane was losing altitude too quickly.

According to previous studies by the Flight Safety Foundation and other industry groups, nonprecision approaches are at least five times more likely to result in an accident or incident than full-blown instrument approaches when visibility is poor.

John Cox, a former U.S. airline pilot and currently an industry consultant who has investigated numerous crashes, said that over the years «there have been fewer and fewer of these types of accidents» as commercial airliners increasingly rely on instruments that «provide precise vertical guidance» to pilots. Some of these systems are so sophisticated that pilots can land when visibility is under 400 feet.

Mr. Cox said safety rules would have barred a large commercial jet from making a nonprecision approach to the Russian strip. Even pilots of a small business jet or private aircraft most likely would have tried to swoop down and determine visibility, he said, before risking a touchdown without advanced instrument landing aids.

Until now, perhaps the most renowned crash of a VIP jet on a nonprecision approach was the 1996 accident that killed then-Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 34 other people in Croatia. The U.S. Air Force jet, a modified Boeing 737, used an improper approach and was flying too fast, investigators determined, when it strayed off course and crashed into a mountainside in bad weather near the Dubrovnik airport.

In August 1997, a Korean Air jetliner with 254 people aboard crashed into a mountain while flying a nonprecision approach into the Guam International Airport in darkness and rain. Investigators determined that with certain ground navigation aids out of operation, the captain became distracted, failed to properly keep track of the Boeing 747’s position and then refused to pull up despite warnings from other crew members as well as from the on-board collision-avoidance system. There were 228 fatalities.

U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces normally deploy special radars at remote airfields with minimal landing aids. The radars provide a glide slope and more precise landing assistance.

Other important safety equipment may never have been installed in the Tupolev’s flight deck. Commercial jets built in the U.S., Europe, Canada and Brazil normally are equipped with ground-collision warning systems that give pilots repeated alerts—including a loud computer-generated voice advising them to «pull up»—if the plane is headed toward a collision with the ground. In many instances, such systems advise pilots 30 seconds or more before an impending crash.

Since the mid-1990s, when advanced ground-collision warning systems became standard on major Western-built commercial aircraft, crashes of properly functioning jetliners into mountains or while descending toward airports have all but disappeared.

While there hasn’t been any official word about whether the Polish jet had such devices onboard, safety experts over the weekend said most Russian aircraft don’t have them as standard equipment.

The ground-warning systems were mandated in much of the world, but aviation and military officials in the former Soviet Union balked at including them on jetliners because the equipment continually collects data about the terrain around airports and sends it to computers in the U.S., where the systems were developed. This was considered a potential security risk by ex-Soviet military authorities, according to one air-safety specialist.

Although the plane was 20 years old, it could easily have been retrofitted with the equipment. A spokesman for Honeywell International Inc., which developed the most advanced version of ground-collision warning devices, said Sunday that preliminary data indicated that the company’s system wasn’t installed on the Polish jet.

Advanced technology is no guarantee of safety. In 2002, a Russian Tu-154 passenger jet fitted with an advanced system to avoid midair collisions slammed into a similarly equipped cargo jet above Germany after a Swiss air-traffic controller incorrectly told both planes to do the opposite of what the automated equipment wanted to do to protect them. The crash killed 69 people.

The last high-profile Polish military crash happened in early 2008, when an air force cargo plane clipped trees and crashed less than a mile short of a runway at a base in the northwest part of the country, killing all 20 people aboard. Reports at the time indicated there was heavy rain and poor visibility at the field, and the pilots weren’t using an instrument landing system.

Former Orioles pitcher Jamie Moyer ’s effort to blanket America with bereavement camps for children is based on nothing personal.

No tragedy in Moyer’s own life spurred him to create a nationwide network of support centers for youngsters who are grieving for loved ones – like the camp that is coming to Maryland in July.

«Why do this? Why not?» said Moyer, who, at 47, is still pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies .

«We all have to deal with death, but when a child has to do it, it’s really unfortunate,» he said. «I can’t imagine an 8-year-old having a sibling or parent passing, and trying to cope.»

To that end, on July 23-25, the Moyer Foundation will launch Camp Erin Baltimore, a weekend-long experience of both fun activities and grief counseling at NorthBay, in North East in Cecil County. The camp, located on the Chesapeake Bay, is free for children ages 6 to 17 who are mourning the death of a family member or friend.

The camp can accommodate 50 youngsters and will operate in connection with Roberta’s House, a family grief support center in Baltimore. Applications are being accepted online at robertashouse.org, or call 410-235-6633.

Camp Erin is named for the late Erin Metcalf, a teenage cancer patient in Washington state whom Moyer and his wife, Karen, befriended during his time with the Seattle Mariners .

Since its inception in 2002, Camp Erin has spawned 36 camps in 23 states. Moyer’s goal is «to put one in every Major League city.» To date, only New York, Pittsburgh and Houston are missing.

Adding Maryland to the mix was a given, said Moyer, who played for the Orioles from 1993 to 1996 and resurrected his pitching career here. Signed by Baltimore as a free agent, he’d gone winless (0-5) with St. Louis in 1992.

«I came to the Orioles to try to find myself, my career and my life,» said Moyer.

That first season, at the request of a family friend, he visited a cancer-stricken child at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and struck up a friendship.

«The bond we created allowed me to keep my job in perspective,» said Moyer, who has eight children of his own. «It really hit me, how blessed we were.»

The child survived, and Moyer’s career took an upturn. He won 25 games while with the Orioles and has gone on to notch 258 career victories.

«The baseball part was cool,» he said last week, during a visit to Baltimore. «But to be able to leave this type of legacy, in this community, for grieving children, which can help them for many, many years down the road, is very gratifying.»

He knows he’s on the right track, said Moyer, from comments he has received from other big-league players.

«They’ll come up to me and say, ‘I could have benefited from that [camp] when I was a kid,’ » he said.

Hackers Break Into New Apple’s New iPhone Software

The new Apple (AAPL) iPhone operating system, known as OS 4.0, was only introduced two days ago. Hackers have already broken into the system so that they can run pirated software on the handset.

According to Apple Insider, “A hacker from the iPhone Dev Team who goes by the handle MuscleNerd uploaded on Friday a video of an iPhone 3GS running the iPhone OS 4 beta, as well as Veency, which is virtual network computing software available as an unauthorized application for the iPhone.”

Once the security software for OS 4.0 has been broken, iPhone users with hacked versions of the operating system can download a number of applications which Apple has not approved. These “apps” take money and downloads away from those sold at the Apple App Store. 24/7 Wall St. estimated that Apple and its application partners have lost nearly $500 million to piracy since the Store opened in July 2008.

Software security may be the largest hurdle to the success of the iPhone and the App Store. Apple has indicated that it has sold 50 million units of the handset, has had 3 billion downloads of applications, and has a total of 150,000 approved apps available to its customers.

But, pirated versions of the App Store’s best products undermine the financial incentives of developers to spend time creating software for the handset. None of the other handset operating systems has anywhere near the number of applications that Apple does. The new Google (GOOG) Android OS has been gaining market share in the mobile market, but that growth is almost certain to be undermined by the very modest number of application downloads available to consumers on Android enabled phones. The figure is so low, Android is hardly worth hacking.
